Driving Data Literacy in the Public Sector

Wed. August 10, 2022 @ 12:00 ET

Featured Speaker: Jeremy Golant, Government Solutions Consultant at Coursera

As data becomes more seamlessly integrated within decision-making processes, public sector agencies must ensure individuals across the workforce can read, work with, and question data in the context of their role. Data literacy shouldn’t be mistaken for technical literacy, and it doesn’t necessarily include the skills and knowledge needed by a data scientist. Rather, data literacy is now increasingly recognized as a core workforce competency and something that public sector agencies need to pay attention to. In this webinar, we’ll explore the concept of data literacy, share the impact that a more data literate workforce can have on public sector agencies, and provide a roadmap for driving data skills development in your own organization. Be sure to stick around till the end for Q&A with Jeremy!

Question: Is there a program like this targeting nonprofits and other social impact organizations?

Jeremy Golant's Answer:

Coursera for Government is proud to work with nonprofit and social impact organizations as part of its overall partnership portfolio. To give a couple of examples, on the Workforce Development side, we have worked closely with the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream (MCAAD) to launch The American Dream Academy, which focuses on providing scholarships for certified skills training to over 200,000 underemployed Americans over the course of three years in order to unlock their full economic potential. The program focuses on preparing participants for well-paying digital jobs in fields such as data analytics, IT support, social media marketing, and cybersecurity. As well, on the Employee Upskilling side, Coursera for Government works with leading humanitarian organizations to advance their employees' proficiency in technical understanding. There is a lot of good work to be done in the nonprofit and social impact sectors, and we welcome the opportunity to discuss how we might partner with other organizations to make meaningful advancements upon their learning goals.
