Patient Safety, Laboratory Interoperability, and SHIELD with Gregory Pappas, Associate Director for National Surveillance at the FDA

Thu. July 01, 2021 @ 11:30 ET

Special Featured Guest: Gregory Pappas MD Ph.D., Associate Director National Surveillance at the Food & Drug Administration (FDA)

Laboratory data is critical to patient safety and essential for a wide variety of uses from public health surveillance to research.  Despite the fact that laboratory data has been digitalized for decades, aggregation is difficult because of problems with semantic interoperability. SHIELD (Systemic Harmonization and Interoperability Enhancement for Lab Data) is a public-private partner with over 70 partners devoted to establishing a national system for “describing the same test the same way, every time.”  Gregory will set out current barriers to laboratory interoperability and the SHIELD Strategic Planning Effort that is currently underway.

Agenda:

  • 11:30-12:30pm: Featured Presentation
  • 12:30-13:00pm: Your Q&A and interaction
